Just What Are QR Codes Anyways?
|
QR code is the abbreviation for QUICK RESPONSE CODE and is the trademark for a type of two-dimensional barcode. QR Codes were first designed for the Japanese automobile industry but have they come a long way since then. Now you can find them everywhere from marketing campaigns to personal blogs and websites, books, stories, images and more.
A QR code consists of black squares arranged in a cube grid on a white background, which can be read by a camera (like everyone's smart phone). This image then can direct the viewer to media. Any kind of media. The maker controls the content. And it goes on. Users with a QR reader application on their phone can scan the image to display text, contact information, connect to a wifi , or open a web page in the telephone's browser. This act of linking from physical world objects is called hardlinking. QR codes also may be linked to a location to track where a code has been scanned. The application that scans the QR code retrieves the geo information by using GPS (or cell tower triangulation) or the URL encoded in the QR code itself is associated with a location. This is usually the case. |
So is it worth it to use QR Codes?
The potential for QR Codes as has been shown here seems to be limitless. Social media is causing a viral spread of QR codes by bringing people together with technology, and extending it to enhance the experience of the viewer. In other words QR codes make quick connections for anyone with a smart device. |
